Why not?
Learning and experiencing new things. I think it does not cost you any effort to come up with a reason why you do not want to do this. In this blog you get them from me as a gift :-), but I mainly want to share why you should want to do this!
I’m not comfortable with it
No, of course you are not comfortable with it. Learning or experiencing new things, stepping out of your comfort zone, everything in you resists change. It’s great to walk the beaten path, but doesn’t it also get a little boring and predictable? If you keep doing what you were doing, you will get what you got (Albert Einstein). Precisely, by stepping out of your normal doing you will develop yourself, you will grow. You become more confident, intelligent and creative.
I have no time
Yes, it’s a commonly used “excuse.” And yes, I definitely use it too. But if you really want something, make time for it! It’s a matter of setting priorities, really choosing for yourself. Get up a quarter of an hour earlier. 6 days of getting up 15 minutes earlier can save you 1.5 hours in a week! Each week 1,5 hours time for yourself, to learn and experience new things! With 1,5 hours a week you can learn to play the Ukulele, draw portraits or knit a sweater.
I am not going to finish it
Do you get tired just thinking about starting something? Who says you have to finish it? And yes, I, read: the perfectionist in me, certainly recognize this. You don’t have to do anything! You can also learn new things and experience without “finishing” something. And maybe you think it’s a waste of money? There are also plenty of free e-courses on the Internet. Downside of free may be that it doesn’t give you a sufficient stick, but it seems to me a good starting point. And if you didn’t choose the right course after all, proud of yourself, just choose again….
I already know everything
If you know everything already and have experienced it, don’t do it! But do you really know everything? Have you really experienced everything? Maybe it’s time to teach others! On the other hand, you are never done learning. Yes, I sometimes hear something in a training course that I have heard before, what I already know or can do. And yet there are always new insights, points of view and lessons to be learned. Always try to ask yourself this question, “what can I learn from this?”. You’ll be surprised, it’s more than you think!
I have no desire
“Then make sense of it,” my mother used to say. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with this phrase. If you don’t feel like it, just don’t do it! No one is deciding for you what you should do. On the other hand, you will find that when you DO start, it will eventually give you energy and meaning.
Even more reasons to do it anyway
It broadens your world, your world view. You get to know new people. You just learn something new! Something you could not do yet, you can do now! It offers new possibilities and opportunities. And it’s just a lot of fun! 🙂
Why not learn to play the Ukelele?
Why is there a picture of a Ukulele with this blog? Because last year I gave myself an Ukulele as a present. Because I thought it would be great to sing again and accompany myself and because you can play a song on a Ukulele within a weekend. So why not? And I really love to do it! I bought mine, including a very nice book at Uked.
So I’m curious, what are you going to learn?
